Oman Launches First Experimental Scientific Rocket: Duqm-1

The Sultanate of Oman is set to make a significant leap in its scientific and technical endeavors with the launch of its first experimental scientific rocket, named "Duqm-1." This historic event is scheduled for next Wednesday from a launch pad located in the Al Wusta Governorate, south of the Duqm area. The rocket, measuring 6.5 meters in length and weighing 80 kilograms empty (123 kilograms when fueled), aims to reach an altitude of 140 kilometers at a speed of 1,530 meters per second during its approximately 15-minute test flight. The launch is being conducted under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, in collaboration with strategic partners, with the implementation handled by Etlaq Company, a subsidiary of the National Space Services Company.

Strategic Vision for Space Exploration

Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, emphasized that this project is part of a broader strategic initiative aimed at localizing space sciences and technologies. The launch of Duqm-1 marks the beginning of establishing a space port in Oman, which is expected to cater to commercial and research needs in space launch services. This initiative is aligned with Oman’s Vision 2040, which seeks to diversify the economy and create job opportunities through innovation in the space sector.

Future Plans and Innovations

Oman plans to conduct three additional rocket launches in 2025 as part of its commitment to enhancing its leadership in the space industry. The geographical location of Oman, close to the equator and the Tropic of Cancer, positions it as an ideal regional hub for space services, reducing costs and time for reaching various orbits. Furthermore, the recent launch of Oman’s first satellite, specializing in remote sensing and enhanced with artificial intelligence, marks the Sultanate's entry into the field of space technology. The establishment of the Space Settlement Centre in the Duqm Special Economic Zone is also a notable project, designed to simulate space conditions for astronaut training and research in advanced technologies.
