The swimming events in the Seine have not finished making headlines. While for the moment, none of them have been canceled, already five training sessions have had to be postponed due to excessively high bacteria levels in the river - like again, this Tuesday August 6, the training for the open water swimming event.
The men's individual triathlon event was postponed by one day, again due to water unsuitable for swimming on the big day. It was finally held on the same day as the women's event, Wednesday 31 last July. Since then, Belgian triathlete Claire Michel has fallen ill (without, however, being hospitalized, as was initially indicated by Belgian media) and her delegation considered a link with the swimming event in the Seine. But this link is doubtful: the symptoms of an infection by the E. coli bacteria appear on average 3 to 4 days after contamination, and the athlete said she was ill the same day.
