Nine Escape from Nice Detention Center
On the evening of December 1, nine individuals escaped from the administrative detention center (CRA) in Nice, France. The Alpes-Maritimes prefecture confirmed the incident on December 2, stating that one of the escapees has been apprehended while the remaining eight are still at large. The circumstances surrounding the escape are under investigation, with reports indicating that the detainees may have damaged a false ceiling to facilitate their escape, according to Laurent Alcaraz, the departmental delegate of Alliance in the Alpes-Maritimes.
Investigations Underway
In response to the escape, two investigations have been initiated. An administrative investigation aims to clarify the details of the incident, while a judicial investigation has been launched by the Nice prosecutor's office. The CRA in Nice, which is situated within the Auvare police barracks, has a capacity of 40 individuals and is often at full capacity. It is designed to hold foreigners awaiting removal from France, typically for a maximum of 90 days.
Security Concerns at the CRA
The CRA has been noted for its changing population, with many detainees having recently left prison. Despite the presence of 70 border police officers assigned to maintain security, the escape raises significant concerns about the effectiveness of the current security measures in place. The prefecture and police are actively searching for the eight remaining escapees, and further updates are expected as investigations progress.
