In recent months, Africa has witnessed campaigns of enticement and pressure from some of its countries seeking to nominate their sons in the upcoming elections in February 2025 to elect a new chairperson of the African Union Commission, as the current and final term of the current chairperson of the Commission, Chadian diplomat Moussa Faki, ends early next year.
These developments have raised questions about the importance of the African Union in resolving African challenges and the role of its presidency in the internal divisions and disputes taking place in the various regions of the continent, in addition to the reasons for the contradiction of some of its positions on international issues.
The African Union Commission serves as the executive secretariat of the Union, reflecting its organizational structure and advocating its objectives under the auspices of the Executive Committee and the Assembly of African Heads of State and Government.
The African Union’s lackluster role in the long list of crises underscores the continental organization’s weak effectiveness in regional contexts.
