NATO has developed extensive plans for relocating US troops to Europe in case of a military conflict with Russia. Central to these plans are alternative routes and contingencies to ensure troop movements remain uninterrupted even if key ports are bombed.
US troops would ideally land in Rotterdam in the Netherlands and move to NATO's eastern flank via land corridors. However, recognizing the vulnerabilities of northern European ports, contingency plans involve rerouting troops to ports in southern countries such as Italy, Greece, and Turkey. These routes would avoid local regulations, ensuring efficient and unrestricted movement of shipments.
These strategic initiatives stem from observations of Russia's tactics in Ukraine, where logistics bases have been primary targets. This has necessitated a shift to more flexible and less centralized logistics operations, avoiding large, easily-targeted bases. However, air defense remains a significant a weak point that NATO continues to address.
The backdrop to these preparations includes Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the more recent invasion of Ukraine, which has significantly altered NATO's defense posture. Currently, around 40,000 NATO troops are stationed from Estonia to Romania, demonstrating a strong deterrent presence on NATO's eastern flank.
Concurrently, in response to the Russian invasion, Ukraine has carried out several drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. One notable recent attack targeted an oil refinery in Azov. Ukraine’s strategy includes not only defending its territory but also retaliating to disrupt Russia's logistics and economic capabilities, impacting the enemy's operations and garnering international support for their cause.
