On June 9, the National Rally list, led by Jordan Bardella, achieved a striking victory in the European elections, securing 31.36% of the votes. Following closely were the presidential majority with 14.60%, the Socialist Party-Place publique with 13.83%, La France insoumise with 9.89%, The Republicans capturing 7.24%, the Ecologists at 5.50%, and Reconquest! at 5.47%, according to the finalized results from the Ministry of the Interior.
Marianne, intrigued by these results, commissioned a survey through IFOP to delve into the television viewing habits of the voters. Conducted among 2,871 registered voters from a sample representing the French demographic aged 18 and above, the online self-administered questionnaire on June 9, 2024, revealed interesting insights. The survey indicated that 44% of TF1's 8 p.m. news viewers and 39% of the “19.45” viewers on M6 supported the National Rally.
Conversely, the 8 p.m. news from France 2 attracted different voter preferences: 26% for Raphaël Glucksmann’s Socialist Party-Place publique and 23% for Valérie Hayer’s Renaissance list. The split extended to popular talk shows as well. Half of the viewers of “Touche pas à mon poste!” hosted by Cyril Hanouna on C8 voted for far-right parties, specifically 42% for the National Rally and 8% for Reconquest.
On the opposite end, the talk show “Quotidien” primarily appealed to left-wing voters with 22% supporting Raphael Glucksmann and 16% backing Manon Aubry of La France insoumise. Nevertheless, Jordan Bardella’s National Rally managed to capture 19% of its viewers. Similar trends emerged from Anne-Élisabeth Lemoine's “C à vous” on France 5, which saw 23% of its viewers supporting the Socialist Party-Place publique and 16% supporting the National Rally.
The political discourse continued with the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, who was queried on CNews about his voting preferences in a potential second round between an RN candidate and a Popular Front candidate. Emphasizing action over comments, Darmanin stated, “I would not vote for an RN candidate, nor for an LFI candidate.” He noted he could support an LR or a socialist candidate instead. Reiterating his stance, Darmanin expressed his disapproval of France Insoumise, criticizing their perceived betrayal of foundational values and law enforcement.
- When asked about the dissolution decision, Gérald Darmanin indicated it was a positive move, praising President Emmanuel Macron for his quick, 'Gaullian' decision. He further described the majority as the 'anti-system,' stressing the paradox of their position.
