Mysterious Bang in Mediterranean: Experts Debate Meteorite or Other Causes

A mysterious bang from Tuscany to Corsica on June 20, 2024, initially thought to be an earthquake, has experts debating whether a meteorite or other causes are responsible. The event has sparked various theories but remains unexplained.

A mysterious bang caused fear and confusion from Tuscany to Corsica on Thursday, June 20, 2024. Initially, many believed it was an earthquake, but experts quickly dismissed this hypothesis. The town of Campo nell'Elba reported a 'seismic acoustic event' at 4:30 p.m. local time, which was also felt on the French island of Corsica.

Eugenio Giani, the Tuscan regional president, initially announced it as an earthquake but later retracted his statement after the Italian seismological observatory found no evidence of seismic activity. Experts from the geophysical institute and the University of Florence suggested that the cause was likely a meteorite entering the atmosphere, moving at a speed of more than 600 kilometers per second.

This theory is supported by Marco Morelli, director of the Parsec Foundation, who believes a fragment of an asteroid disintegrated in the Earth's atmosphere, releasing significant energy. The origin of the bang was identified south of the island of Montecristo. However, this remains a theory, as no seismographs registered an impact, and there were no visual observations of a fireball.

An unnamed employee of the Italian civil protection authority suggested that an airplane might be the cause, although Giani ruled this out. Another theory proposed is an underwater gas eruption. This incident is not isolated; similar unexplained bangs were reported in 2012, 2016, and 2023. According to Gianmario Gentini from the West Elba Civil Protection Agency, these explosions have been occurring for at least ten years.

  • The mysterious bang on the Mediterranean coast has left experts and residents puzzled. While the meteorite theory seems plausible, the lack of concrete evidence leaves room for other possibilities. The Italian Air Force has denied any involvement, and no reports of a sonic boom from an airplane have been confirmed.
  • The phenomenon has sparked various theories, ranging from space-related events to underwater activities. The recurring nature of these bangs over the years adds to the mystery, making it a topic of ongoing investigation. Local authorities and scientific institutions continue to monitor and study these events in hopes of finding a definitive explanation.
