Morocco Launches Ambitious $1.1 Billion National Digital Transformation Strategy

Morocco has unveiled an ambitious National Digital Transformation Strategy, backed by a budget of $1.1 billion, aimed at revolutionizing public services and bolstering the economy. The announcement was made by Ghita Mezzour, the Moroccan Minister of Digital Transition, during a ceremony in Rabat. The strategy seeks to digitize services in public administrations, making them more accessible to citizens and businesses alike, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing the time required to obtain public services.

The initiative is part of a broader vision to elevate Morocco’s standing in the global e-government development index, with a target to improve its rank from 113th to 50th. The strategy is designed to transform Morocco into a digital hub, fostering social and economic development across the Kingdom. Mezzour emphasized that the plan aims to create approximately 240,000 job opportunities for young people and provide training for 140,000 individuals in digitization each year until 2030.

Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch highlighted the significance of the digital sector, stating that it offers numerous job opportunities. He noted that the strategy was developed through extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including public administrations, professional unions, training institutions, and the private sector. The government is committed to ensuring the successful implementation of this comprehensive plan.

Chakib Alj, President of the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises, expressed strong support for the strategy, underscoring the private sector’s role in its execution. He called for encouraging companies to adopt new technologies and collaborate with start-ups to enhance Morocco’s digital economy. Alj also stressed the importance of fostering an entrepreneurial mindset and developing innovative approaches to improve access to global markets through digital exports.

As Morocco embarks on this digital transformation journey, the government and private sector are poised to work together to harness the potential of technology, ultimately aiming to enhance the quality of life for its citizens and drive economic growth.
