Morocco's Automotive Industry: A Leader in Africa

Morocco has established itself as the leading country in Africa's automobile industry, with Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch announcing that the nation exports 700,000 cars annually to over 70 countries. This achievement has resulted in revenues exceeding $11.5 billion as of October 2024. Akhannouch highlighted the government's efforts in transforming Morocco into a significant automotive manufacturing hub, boasting an annual production capacity of nearly 700,000 vehicles.

Growth and Investment in Car Manufacturing

In recent years, Morocco has emerged as a key player in car manufacturing on the continent, attracting substantial investments and becoming a central location for assembling car parts. The Prime Minister noted that the country has developed a robust industrial ecosystem, comprising more than 250 suppliers of automotive components. This growth has led to a remarkable 28% increase in car exports, reaching 148 billion dirhams ($14.8 billion) in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Embracing Electric Mobility

As the global automotive industry shifts towards electric mobility, Morocco is positioning itself as a pioneer in this sector. The government is actively working to adapt to these changes, with three types of electric vehicles currently being produced in the country. Notably, Morocco manufactured its first hybrid car in July 2024 and has seen significant developments in electric vehicle production, including the launch of Renault's first electric car at its Tangier plant in September 2021. These initiatives underscore Morocco's commitment to leading the charge in sustainable automotive manufacturing in Africa.
