Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki Faces New Terrorism Charges
Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki has revealed that his legal troubles have intensified as his file has been referred to the judiciary in charge of terrorism, now including 20 new charges. These charges, which he disclosed via his social media account, encompass allegations of stirring up internal unrest, incitement, and spreading rumors. Marzouki's brother, Mukhlis Marzouki, was summoned to the Kantaoui police station to sign documents related to these new developments.
Marzouki, who held the presidency from 2011 to 2014, has faced significant legal challenges in recent years. He was previously sentenced in absentia to 8 years in prison in February for charges related to attacking state security and inciting division among Tunisians. Additionally, in December 2021, he received a four-year prison sentence for similar offenses, including attacking state security abroad. Marzouki has been a prominent critic of the current Tunisian President Kais Saied, further complicating his political and legal standing.
