Microsoft Exposes Russian Disinformation Campaign Against Kamala Harris Ahead of 2024 Election
As the 2024 US election approaches, Microsoft has sounded the alarm over a surge in disinformation efforts aimed at undermining Vice President Kamala Harris. In a recent Threat Intelligence Report, the tech giant revealed that Russian intelligence services are intensifying their online attacks, utilizing fake videos and conspiracy theories to manipulate public perception.
One particularly damaging video, which has garnered millions of views, falsely depicts Harris supporters attacking a Trump rally attendee. Another outrageous claim suggests that Harris was involved in a hit-and-run accident that paralyzed a young girl in 2011. These misleading narratives have been disseminated through a fake news site posing as a local outlet in San Francisco, with significant reach on social media platforms like X.
According to Microsoft, groups such as Storm-1516, Ruza Flood, and Storm-1679 are behind these efforts, aiming to discredit Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz. Microsoft has a history of observing Russian influence tactics, noting that similar operations were conducted against Democratic candidates in the past three presidential elections, particularly ramping up in the final 90 days before Election Day.
Kremlin's Strategy and Broader Context
The Kremlin's campaign against Harris began shortly after her candidacy announcement, characterized by a mix of racism, sexism, and conspiracy theories. Interestingly, Russian President Vladimir Putin has publicly expressed a preference for Harris over Trump, citing her potential for less restrictive policies towards Russia. This paradox highlights the complexities of foreign influence in US elections.
However, Russia is not acting alone. Microsoft has also identified a China-linked group, Storm-1852, which has been spreading disinformation about Harris and Biden, impersonating conservative voters on social media. Additionally, Iranian operatives have been implicated in efforts to undermine the Republican campaign through targeted hacks and fake news.
As the election date of November 5 draws near, Microsoft’s findings underscore the urgent need for vigilance against foreign interference.
