Michel Barnier's Government Seminar Sets the Stage for Future Policies
Prime Minister Michel Barnier is taking decisive steps to shape the future of the French government. A seminar scheduled for Friday afternoon at Matignon aims to prepare for his upcoming general policy statement on October 1st. This critical meeting, which will run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., is expected to outline Barnier's roadmap for the nation. Following the seminar, the government will gather for an official photo, notably without President Emmanuel Macron.
Before this seminar, Barnier will engage with the National Assembly on Tuesday and the Senate on Wednesday, participating in the Conference of Presidents. This weekly gathering includes key political figures and is crucial for fostering dialogue between the government and parliament. Barnier's involvement underscores his commitment to collaboration and transparency in governance.
In a significant first meeting on Monday, Barnier convened his new cabinet for breakfast followed by a Council of Ministers. During this session, he emphasized the importance of unity and the higher interest of the nation. Barnier encouraged his ministers to demonstrate courage and ambition as they tackle their responsibilities, reflecting a commitment to a cohesive government.
The new cabinet, comprising 39 members, is larger than average for the Fifth Republic, which typically has around 35 members. This team includes 19 ministers and 15 deputy ministers, marking a notable shift in the administration's structure. Interestingly, the average age of the cabinet has increased to 52.5 years, with Barnier himself being the oldest at 73. This blend of experience and youth, with eight ministers in their thirties, aims to bring diverse perspectives to the government's agenda.
