The Minister for Overseas Territories, François-Noël Buffet, announced a plan to reduce prices on 6,000 essential products by 20% in Martinique by January 2025, amid ongoing protests against the high cost of living.

Price Reduction Initiative in Martinique

During a recent visit to Martinique, François-Noël Buffet, the Minister for Overseas Territories, announced a significant initiative aimed at reducing the cost of living on the island. The government has set a target for a 20% reduction in prices on 6,000 essential products by January 1, 2025. This announcement follows a protocol signed on October 16, which was designed to address the escalating cost of living that has sparked widespread protests since September.

The products affected by this price reduction are described as essential and diverse, indicating a broad range of necessities that will be impacted. Buffet emphasized the importance of this initiative during a press conference held at the prefecture of Martinique, where he met with local officials and economic stakeholders to discuss the implementation of this plan.

Background of Protests

The announcement comes in the wake of significant unrest in Martinique, where a local association, the Rally for the Protection of Afro-Caribbean Peoples and Resources (RPPRAC), has been leading protests against high living costs since September 1. These protests have escalated into urban riots, resulting in over 230 vehicles being burned and numerous commercial establishments vandalized or looted. The RPPRAC has rejected the price protocol, maintaining a firm stance against the government's measures.

Tensions and Government Response

During his visit, Buffet expressed his willingness to engage with all parties, including the leaders of the RPPRAC, who recently returned from Paris after organizing demonstrations. However, tensions escalated when RPPRAC leaders attempted to confront the minister at the prefect's private residence, demanding a meeting that was ultimately denied. Buffet criticized the activists' approach as

arguing that their request was not formally made. Additionally, a planned public engagement in Fort-de-France was canceled due to scheduling conflicts, although Buffet assured that other field visits would proceed as planned.
