Escalating Violence at Stéphane Mallarmé Middle School in Marseille
The situation at the Stéphane Mallarmé middle school in Marseille has reached alarming levels as the institution, located in a high-risk area, has been targeted by over 80 pellet gunshots. After a brief closure due to teachers exercising their right to withdraw amid escalating insecurity, the school reopened, only to face another incident involving a group of young people who confronted teachers as they left the premises.
The teachers reported feeling threatened, prompting school inspector Jean-Yves Boussol to advocate for a formal complaint against the perpetrators. He emphasized that it is unacceptable for educators to fear for their safety while simply going home. The police presence, which was increased in response to the incidents, managed to disperse the group quickly, but the atmosphere remains tense.
Earlier this week, cleaning staff discovered lead impacts on the school windows, raising serious concerns about safety and security within the educational environment. In response to these events, the newly appointed Minister of National Education, Anne Genetet, canceled her inaugural visit to a primary school to address the urgent situation in Marseille. She convened a meeting to discuss the security of schools and pledged to meet with affected teachers and parents to ensure their voices are heard.
Teachers at the school have expressed their frustration, citing a lack of action from authorities despite repeated reports of dangerous conditions since November 2023. In a statement, they highlighted the need for immediate measures to protect both students and staff from the pervasive violence linked to nearby drug dealing activities. Minister Genetet echoed their concerns, stating that education should not occur in an environment of fear.
The police prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône reassured the community of a continued police presence around the school, emphasizing the commitment to maintaining safety in the area. Meanwhile, local officials, including the mayor of the 13th arrondissement, have shown their support for the school community, pledging to work towards ensuring their safety amidst these troubling circumstances.
