The sports daily L'Equipe has reported that Marquinhos has been re-elected as captain of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) by his teammates, with Achraf Hakimi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Presnel Kimpembe appointed as vice-captains. This decision aligns with the philosophy of Luis Enrique, who implemented a player-driven voting system for captain selection upon his arrival at the club.
Marquinhos, at 30 years old, has been a significant presence in the PSG locker room and has held the captaincy since Thiago Silva's departure to Chelsea in 2020. He has served as captain under multiple coaches, including Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, and Christophe Galtier. Luis Enrique has emphasized the importance of player autonomy in leadership roles, stating, 'I don't choose the captains; the players do.'
The recent voting took place at the end of training, and the outcome was expected, with Marquinhos retaining the armband. This year's voting also allowed for new vice-captains to emerge, as previous vice-captains Kylian Mbappé and Danilo Pereira have left the club. The new vice-captains—Kimpembe, Donnarumma, and Hakimi—are now in position to support Marquinhos in his leadership role.
