A tragic incident unfolded in Compiègne, Oise, where a 55-year-old transgender woman was killed by her partner with an ax. The suspect, a 40-year-old man, turned himself in to the police on Friday, confessing to the crime after a violent argument with the victim. The Senlis prosecutor's office confirmed his indictment and imprisonment.
The accused, who has a history of legal troubles including financial offenses and intentional violence, admitted to the police that the argument led him to grab a small ax and strike his partner. The victim's body was discovered at their shared residence by investigators, who found her with fatal stab wounds inflicted by the ax.
A judicial investigation into murder by a partner has been initiated. Prosecutor Loïc Abrial emphasized that there is no evidence at this stage to suggest that the victim's gender transition played a role in the crime. The investigation is being handled by the Compiègne police station under the direction of the city's public prosecutor's office, with a probable transfer to the Senlis public prosecutor's office over the weekend.
This tragic case adds to the alarming statistics of femicide in France, where on average, a woman is murdered every three days. In 2023, 94 such cases have been reported, following 118 in 2022. Associations fighting against femicide report that over 50 women have been killed by their partners since the beginning of 2024.
