California Fires Force Evacuations of Thousands, Including Celebrities
A devastating fire, known as the "Franklin Fire," has prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents in Malibu, California, including notable figures such as actor Dick Van Dyke and singer Cher. The fire, which broke out on December 9, 2024, has rapidly spread, consuming over 1,150 hectares (approximately 2,200 acres) and destroying several homes. As of now, around 20,000 people are under evacuation orders or alerts, with 6,000 residents advised to leave their properties immediately.
Dick Van Dyke, who is set to celebrate his 99th birthday soon, shared on social media that he and his wife, Arlene, evacuated with their pets, except for one cat named Bobo, who escaped during the chaos. Cher, along with actress Mira Sorvino, also evacuated their homes, with Cher taking refuge in a hotel. The fire has caused significant disruptions, including the closure of schools and roads in the area, as fire crews work tirelessly to contain the blaze.
Firefighters Battle Uncontrolled Blaze Amid High Winds
Firefighters are facing challenging conditions as they combat the Franklin Fire, which has been exacerbated by strong winds and dry vegetation. The National Weather Service has issued a red alert for Los Angeles County and surrounding areas, warning of gusts reaching up to 120 km/h (approximately 75 mph). As of now, approximately 1,500 firefighters are on the ground, supported by water bomber planes to help control the flames.
Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart described the situation as traumatic for the community, noting that the city hall was also threatened by the fire, prompting officials to relocate their emergency operations. Preliminary assessments indicate that at least seven structures have been destroyed, with eight others damaged. The fire's rapid spread has raised concerns about the safety of residents and the potential for further destruction in this celebrity-populated area.
