Emmanuel Macron Faces Pressure After Legislative Elections
The recent legislative elections in France have resulted in a political upheaval, with the New Popular Front (NFP) taking the lead but failing to secure a majority. The CGT, a major trade union, has called on President Emmanuel Macron to respect the election results and form a new government around the NFP's program. The union criticized Macron for his attempts to equate the far-right with the left, which they argue has legitimized the National Rally and its ideology.
The CGT emphasized the need for social demands to be heard, insisting that work should allow people to live with dignity and that public services should be developed across all territories. They also warned against employers who have shown complacency towards the extreme right. Similarly, the CFDT, another leading union, stressed the importance of making workers' voices heard in future policies and the role of social partners in calming relations and responding to citizens' expectations.
Political Uncertainty and Calls for Stability
In the wake of the election results, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal offered his resignation to President Macron, who asked him to stay on temporarily to ensure the country's stability. Macron has called for caution and announced that he will not make any immediate statements. He is waiting for the new Assembly to be structured before making any decisions regarding the formation of a new government.
The election results have left France in a state of political uncertainty, as no bloc has secured an absolute majority. According to estimates from the Ifop polling institute, the NFP is projected to win between 180 and 205 seats, followed by Macron's presidential camp with 164 to 174 seats, and the National Rally with 130 to 145 seats. The Republicans and various right-wing parties are expected to collect between 60 and 63 seats. This fragmented outcome has created an unprecedented situation, making it difficult for any single bloc to form a government on its own.
