The man convicted of murdering Victorine Dartois in Isère in 2020, Ludovic Bertin, has appealed his life sentence, leading to a new trial expected in 2025. Bertin, 29, was sentenced to life imprisonment after a two-week trial in Grenoble, where he was found guilty of strangling and drowning the 18-year-old student following an attempted rape. He was also convicted of a separate rape case involving another young woman in 2018. The appeal was confirmed by attorney general Françoise Benezech, who stated that the new trial will take place before the Drôme Assize Court, which is part of the Grenoble Court of Appeal. Kelly Monteiro, the lawyer for the Dartois family, expressed that while she was not surprised by Bertin's appeal, the civil parties are disheartened by the prospect of enduring another lengthy and painful trial.
