Prominent Figures Honored in the July 14 Legion of Honor Promotion
The prestigious Legion of Honor has recognized over 500 distinguished individuals in its latest civilian promotion, as announced in the Official Journal on Tuesday. This year’s list, published ahead of the usual national holiday date due to the political context in France, includes a diverse array of personalities who have made significant contributions to the general interest and the influence of France.
Among the notable figures, Virginie Efira, a celebrated actress, and Amin Maalouf, a renowned writer, have been knighted. The mathematician Claire Voisin and the presenter Michel Drucker have been promoted to the rank of commander. Additionally, the former Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne and the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna have also been elevated to the rank of commander.
Prestigious Grand Cross Honors
The highest honor of the Legion of Honor, the grand cross, was awarded to two distinguished individuals: Bernard Esambert, president of the Georges Pompidou Institute, and Joëlle Kauffmann, a former gynecologist and feminist activist. Their elevation to this prestigious circle highlights their exceptional contributions to their respective fields.
In the cultural domain, the actor Jean Reno and the host Michel Drucker have been promoted to commanders. The choreographer Benjamin Millepied and the journalist Caroline Fourest were knighted, alongside the doctor and television host Michel Cymes. The culinary arts were also represented, with the head chef Alain Ducasse being promoted to the rank of officer.
The Legion of Honor, which boasts around 79,000 members, traditionally announces its civilian promotions on January 1 and July 14. This year’s July 14 promotion was brought forward due to the dissolution of the National Assembly and the scheduling of early legislative elections. Notably, the ministers in office have the authority to propose individuals for promotion or appointment.
- The Legion of Honor is the highest French national distinction, awarded to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service to France. This year's list includes a wide range of professionals from various fields, reflecting the diverse talents and contributions of the honorees.
- In addition to the civilian promotions, there are also two military promotions each year. One is published in June-July for active army personnel, and the other in October-November for reserve soldiers and veterans.
