Historic Electoral Victory in France
The streets of Paris were filled with unexpected joy and celebration as the New Popular Front, a coalition of left-wing parties, emerged victorious in the second round of the legislative elections. The demonstration initially organized in support of Palestine quickly transformed into a massive electoral celebration. According to the police, around 8,000 people gathered at Place de la République to celebrate the surprising win.
Left-Wing Coalition Triumphs Over Far-Right
The victory of the New Popular Front came as a shock, especially since Marine Le Pen's far-right National Union party was predicted to win. This election saw the highest turnout since 1997. In the first round, the National Union secured the largest number of votes, but due to France's electoral system, a second decisive round was held in about 500 districts. In these races, the left-wing coalition, bolstered by strategic withdrawals from President Emmanuel Macron's Center Bloc, managed to come out on top, relegating the National Union to third place.
Implications for Macron and Future Policies
This election result is a significant blow to President Macron, who had dissolved the National Assembly and called for snap elections following the National Union's success in the European Parliament elections. While Macron has stated his intention to complete his term until 2027, his presidency may now be severely weakened. The coalition of left-wing, centrist, and conservative parties that came together to prevent a far-right government is seen as a protective measure for the Fifth Republic against the extreme policies of the National Union. These policies include giving 'national preference' to French citizens over immigrants for jobs and housing, and restricting dual citizenship.
