Rising Death Toll and International Aid Following Pager Explosions in Lebanon
The recent pager explosions in Lebanon have resulted in a tragic death toll of 12, including two children, as reported by Health Minister Firas Abiad. On Wednesday, Minister Abiad revealed that hospitals received an overwhelming influx of between 2,750 and 2,800 wounded individuals, with approximately 300 suffering from serious injuries. This incident has prompted a swift response from various nations offering medical aid to support Lebanon's health sector.
The explosions occurred when wireless communication devices, reportedly used by Hezbollah members, detonated, leading to significant casualties. The Lebanese government and Hezbollah have accused Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad, of planting explosives within 5,000 pagers imported months prior to the incident. Although Israel has not commented on these allegations, the implications of the attack have stirred tensions in the region.
Minister Abiad highlighted that 460 surgeries have been performed, primarily focused on treating severe injuries to the eyes and face. In response to the crisis, countries like Iraq and Jordan have stepped up, with Iraq's Ministry of Health announcing the arrival of a shipment containing medicines and medical supplies. Additionally, a Royal Jordanian Air Force plane is en route to Lebanon, loaded with food, medical, and relief supplies aimed at bolstering the beleaguered health sector.
