Kremlin Denies Divorce Reports Amid Assad's Asylum in Russia
The Kremlin has dismissed reports from Turkish media suggesting that Asma al-Assad, the wife of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is seeking a divorce and plans to return to the UK. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that these claims do not reflect reality, emphasizing that there are no restrictions on Assad's movements in Russia. This comes in the wake of the Assad family's relocation to Moscow following the collapse of his regime on December 8, 2024.
Reports indicate that Asma al-Assad, who has been undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, is in communication with law firms regarding her potential separation from Bashar al-Assad. Asma, a British citizen born in London, has faced international sanctions since the onset of the Syrian revolution in 2011, which have restricted her movements and assets. Despite her British citizenship, the UK government has confirmed that she is not welcome due to these sanctions, which were maintained even after Brexit.
Details of Assad's Escape and Family Situation
Bashar al-Assad's escape to Moscow was reportedly facilitated by Russian intelligence, as he fled Syria in a hurry with his eldest son Hafez. Asma al-Assad was already in Moscow for medical treatment when her husband arrived. New investigations reveal that she had been in the Russian capital for several weeks before the regime's fall, and her family is now with her in Moscow.
In addition to her own exit permit application, Asma is reportedly seeking permission for her children to leave Russia as well. While the Kremlin has denied the divorce rumors, the situation remains fluid as the Assads navigate their new life in exile. Russian President Vladimir Putin has granted asylum to the family and has expressed intentions to meet with Bashar al-Assad, although no such meeting has occurred yet.
