The Korean national flag is hung outside the Korean athletes’ accommodation in the 2024 Paris Olympic Village located in Saint-Denis, Paris, on the 23rd.
The Korean athletes, who were worried about the 'heat' at the Paris Olympics, are worried about 'a cold' due to the lower-than-expected temperature.
Yesterday (23rd), when the Paris Olympic Organizing Committee held the Athletes' Village Media Day, it rained all morning in Paris, France, and the temperature fell below 20 degrees Celsius.
An official from the Korea Sports Council, who revealed the Korean athletes' accommodations in time for Media Day, said, "We did our best to prepare for the Parisian summer heat, but at the same time, we also prepared blankets in case the temperature dropped."
The Korea Sports Council is working hard to ensure that athletes train and compete in an environment as similar to Korea as possible.
The number of accommodations allocated to the Korean athletes at the Paris Olympic Village is 89 rooms.
There is no air conditioning in the athletes' village.
To reduce carbon emissions, the Paris Olympic organizing committee did not install indoor air conditioning, but instead sought natural cooling by varying the layout and size of buildings to promote air circulation between buildings.
These systems can keep the inside temperature 6 to 7 degrees Celsius lower than outside.
The Korea Sports Council considered installing an air conditioner, but when the organizing committee expressed opposition due to the 'power consumption' issue, they used other methods to prepare for the heat.
There are 89 cooling fans installed in each room.
We also plan to prepare 26 portable air conditioners and deliver them to players who request them.
Cooling jackets using special eco-friendly refrigerants were also installed in the furniture in the athletes' village.
Since the temperature in Paris is not as high as expected, the Korean team is preparing for the opening (26th) without suffering from the heat yet.
The Korea Sports Council also prepared a mosquito repellent system considering the athlete's village environment without insect screens.
The 'corrugated cardboard beds' that have been used since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics have become much stronger, so athletes can use them without worry.
In Tokyo, the cardboard bed could withstand a load of 200 kg, while the bed at the Paris Olympic Village can withstand a load of 250 kg.
Building B, the athletes’ village used by the Korean athletes, is filled with foods tailored to the ‘athletes’ tastes.’
The lounge on the 3rd to 5th floors is stocked with bowl noodles, instant rice, and kimchi, so players who miss Korean food often visit.
There are many Korean grocery stores in Paris, so the Korean Sports Council obtained bowl noodles and other ingredients locally.
You can also receive treatment from Korean medical staff in the medical room on the first floor.
