The Kings League is capturing the attention of millions as it prepares to kick off on Sunday, May 26, 2024. The riveting format debuted with a match between the French team Foot2rue and the Spanish Pio FC, drawing nearly 500,000 live viewers on Twitch. The French team, led by former professional players Jérémy Menez and Samir Nasri, triumphed after an intense showdown that ended in a penalty shootout following a dramatic four-goal comeback, tying the game at 5-5.
What makes this competition particularly engaging are its unique rules and format. Founded by former football star Gerard Piqué, the league features teams consisting of former football legends like Agüero, Totti, and Eden Hazard, alongside internet personalities such as French streamer Aminematue, Spanish streamer Ibai, and German YouTuber Younes Zarrou. The second round of the tournament is scheduled for Wednesday at 11 p.m. live on Twitch, featuring a clash between Foot2rue and the Mexican team Peluche Caligari. A win here will secure Foot2rue's place in the round of 16.
The popularity and innovative nature of the Kings League have spurred plans for global expansion. Gerard Piqué announced on Tuesday that the league is set to arrive in France by January 2025, with intentions to also expand to territories including Mexico, Italy, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States across 2024 and 2025.
Piqué has emphasized a strategic approach, aligning the French launch with the aftermath of the 2024 Olympic Games, ensuring maximum media exposure. As of now, about ten French cities, including Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, have submitted applications to create franchises and join the championship.
