Kibbutz Bari's Struggle for Answers and Trust
The residents of Kibbutz Bari convened at a hotel near the Dead Sea for almost four hours, seeking clarity and closure from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) regarding the tragic events of October 7. Major General Miki Edelstein and IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Daniel Hagari presented the principles of their investigation, but the kibbutz members left with more questions than answers. The community, still mourning their 101 dead and awaiting the return of abductees, expressed frustration over the lack of concrete steps for future safety.
Acknowledgment of Failures
In a moment that resonated deeply with the attendees, Brigadier General Hagari admitted, 'We abandoned the residents.' This admission, while painful, was seen as a crucial first step in rebuilding trust between the kibbutz and the army. Lotan Alon, a kibbutz member, noted the importance of this acknowledgment, stating that it marked the beginning of a long and complex process of trust restoration. However, many residents, including A. Mabari and Naor Pakziarez, voiced their dissatisfaction with the investigation's lack of depth and actionable insights.
The Need for Concrete Changes
The residents' primary concern was the absence of clear, actionable changes to prevent future tragedies. Naor Pakziarez emphasized the need for specific measures, such as increased military presence and better protective infrastructure. The frustration was palpable, with many residents feeling that the investigation focused too much on past events without addressing future safeguards. Avida Bakr, who lost his wife and son in the attack, highlighted the need for a sense of security if the community is to return to their homes.
Leadership and Responsibility
Former Eshkol Regional Council head, Haim Yelin, shared his insights in an interview, stressing the importance of leadership and responsibility in preventing such tragedies. He pointed out the failures in the IDF's response and the need for a comprehensive review of the security leadership. Yelin emphasized that the current leadership must take responsibility and set a personal example, ensuring that values are upheld over political interests. He also suggested restructuring the command for the Gaza Division to better address the security needs of communities like Kibbutz Bari.
