Karim Ghezal Takes the Helm at LOU Rugby
Karim Ghezal has been appointed as the head coach of LOU Rugby, following his dismissal from Stade Français in September. The announcement was made official by LOU Rugby on December 6, 2024, as the club seeks to turn around a disappointing season where they currently sit 13th in the Top 14 standings. Ghezal, who previously played for LOU from 2014 to 2016, will join the coaching staff alongside manager Fabien Gengenbacher for the remainder of the season.
A Return to Familiar Grounds
Ghezal's connection with LOU Rugby runs deep, having not only played for the club but also served as a coach in various capacities from 2016 to 2019. His experience includes being part of the coaching staff for the French national team from 2020 to 2023, where he assisted head coach Fabien Galthié. Ghezal expressed his gratitude towards LOU, stating, "This club allowed me to join the French Team and continue my progression. I am grateful for that."
Urgent Need for Change
The decision to appoint Ghezal comes in light of LOU's recent struggles, having lost seven matches this season, including a recent defeat to Pau. The management's previous attempt to bolster the coaching staff with New Zealand's Jono Gibbes did not yield the expected results, leading to a swift change in strategy. Ghezal's immediate goal will be to reinvigorate the team and help them meet their objectives for the remaining matches of the season.
