Kalashnikov Unveils the RPL-20: A Game-Changer in Light Machine Guns

The Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov has introduced a revolutionary new 5.45 mm belt-fed light machine gun, the RPL-20, which is set to transform the firepower capabilities of military units. Designed for assault units, the RPL-20 offers a compact and lightweight solution for effective long-term firing, even from unstable positions. With a firing rate of 700 rounds per minute and options for 100 or 200 round belts, this machine gun is tailored to enhance the operational efficiency of ground forces, airborne units, marines, and special forces.

During a recent presentation at Patriot Park, Chief Designer Sergei Urzhumtsev highlighted the machine gun's adaptability, noting its compatibility with various optical-electronic equipment to boost firing accuracy. The first production batch is ready for military testing, and initial feedback from combat conditions has been positive.

The RPL-20: A Step Forward in Military Technology

The RPL-20 represents a significant advancement over the previous RPK-16 model, providing a more logical and efficient design. Weighing approximately 5.5 kg without ammunition, it is available in both long (590 mm) and short (415 mm) barrel versions. This new machine gun aims to replace the heavier Pecheneg PKP currently used by the Russian Armed Forces, which has proven effective but limits mobility for assault teams.

Experts believe the RPL-20 will enhance the firepower of infantry units, allowing for greater maneuverability and tactical advantage. Additionally, the Kalashnikov Concern is reportedly exploring export versions of the RPL-20 in various calibers, potentially appealing to foreign military markets. The RPL-20 is positioned not only as a domestic asset but as a competitive alternative to NATO's FN Minimi and FN Evolys machine guns.

  • The development of the RPL-20 is part of a broader effort to modernize the Russian military's arsenal, ensuring that troops are equipped with cutting-edge technology. The machine gun's design incorporates feedback from military personnel, making it a practical tool for contemporary combat scenarios. As the global arms market evolves, the RPL-20's anticipated export versions could further solidify Russia's position as a key player in small arms manufacturing.
