Jordan to Resume Exports to Syria Next Week
Jordanian Minister of Industry and Trade, Yarub Qudah, announced that exports to Syria are expected to resume early next week, pending readiness from the Syrian side. This announcement follows the recent closure of the Jaber-Nassib crossing due to security concerns in southern Syria. The reopening will facilitate the export of goods through a delivery system between trucks at the border, but passenger movement remains restricted.
The Jaber-Nassib crossing, which connects Jordan and Syria, has faced multiple closures since the onset of the Syrian revolution in 2011. Jordan's trade with Syria has significantly declined, dropping from $617 million in 2010 to just $146.6 million in 2023, largely due to ongoing regional tensions. The Jordanian-Syrian Joint Free Zone, established in 1976, spans 6.5 square kilometers and plays a crucial role in facilitating trade, with around 90 Jordanian trucks entering Syria daily for re-export to Lebanon or local markets.
