A tragic surfing accident occurred off the coast of the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia on October 18, resulting in the death of 36-year-old Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini. Reports indicate that during her surfing session, a swordfish unexpectedly leaped out of the water and struck her in the chest, causing a severe injury. The incident was confirmed by Lahmudin Siregar from the Mentawai Islands Regional Disaster Management Agency and reported by local authorities.

Despite immediate assistance from witnesses who provided first aid and rushed her to a nearby health center, Manfrini succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. The wound was reported to be approximately five centimeters deep, located on the upper left side of her chest, leading to her tragic and untimely death.

Giulia Manfrini was not only an avid surfer but also a well-known figure in the surfing community, boasting over 27,000 followers on social media. She had recently co-founded Awave Travel, a travel agency focused on organizing sports holidays and excursions. Her partner, James Colston, expressed sentiments on social media, stating she died doing what she loved in a place she cherished.

The town hall of Venaria, her hometown near Turin, Italy, honored her memory, highlighting her passion for surfing and her entrepreneurial spirit in establishing a travel agency. This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of ocean sports and the risks involved.
