Continued Israeli Violations of Ceasefire Agreement with Lebanon
On December 5, 2024, the Israeli military reported seven new violations of the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah, raising the total to 136 violations since the ceasefire took effect eight days ago. The violations occurred in various regions, including Nabatieh, Marjeyoun, Bint Jbeil, Hasbaya, and Tyre District. These actions included artillery shelling, drone attacks, and the construction of earthen barriers, which have raised tensions in the region.
In Hasbaya, Israeli forces advanced with tanks and bulldozers to create barriers that obstructed key roads. In Bint Jbeil, houses were reportedly blown up in the Al-Harsh area, while drone activity was noted over the Zahrani area in Nabatieh. Additionally, two sound bombs were thrown at a residential building in Aitaroun, injuring several civilians. In Marjeyoun, artillery targeted a main road, and in Tyre, civil defense teams faced artillery shelling while conducting rescue operations.
The ceasefire, which began on November 27, followed a period of intense conflict that escalated on September 23, 2023. The agreement aimed to halt hostilities and included provisions for Israel's gradual withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the deployment of Lebanese forces along the border. However, the ongoing violations have led to heightened tensions and military responses from Hezbollah, including a missile attack on an Israeli military site.
The conflict has had devastating humanitarian impacts, with reports indicating that over 4,000 people have been killed and more than 16,000 injured, including many women and children. Approximately 1.4 million people have been displaced due to the violence, primarily following the escalation in September.
