Israeli Forces Prepare for Potential Ground Invasion of Lebanon Amid Exhaustion
Israeli troops are facing significant exhaustion and demoralization after nearly a year of intense conflict in Gaza, according to recent reports from Israeli media. As the situation escalates along the northern border with Lebanon, the Israeli military is ramping up preparations for a potential ground campaign against Hezbollah.
The Wall Street Journal has highlighted testimonies from Israeli officers and soldiers indicating that while diplomatic efforts are underway to establish a temporary ceasefire, Israel is simultaneously reinforcing its military presence in the north. Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi confirmed that forces are preparing for a possible ground entry into Lebanon, signaling a shift in military strategy amid ongoing air strikes that continued through Thursday.
In a further sign of escalating tensions, the Israeli army announced the mobilization of two reserve brigades as part of its preparations for increased conflict with Hezbollah. However, the call-up of reservists has been described as modest, especially considering the challenges that lie ahead against a well-entrenched enemy. Reports suggest that many soldiers previously stationed in other regions are being redeployed to the northern border, indicating a broader strategy at play.
Despite these preparations, the toll of the prolonged conflict is evident. Many soldiers, including reserves called back to duty, express fatigue after extensive service in recent months. One reservist noted her exhaustion after nearly 200 days of active duty since the onset of the current conflict on October 7, 2023. This sentiment is echoed by others who fear that an air campaign alone will not suffice in achieving military objectives against Hezbollah.
