Israeli Attack on Al-Mawasi Camp: A Humanitarian Crisis
The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported a devastating toll from an Israeli attack on the Al-Mawasi displaced persons camp in southern Gaza. According to the latest figures, at least 71 people have been killed and 289 injured in what Hamas describes as a 'terrible massacre.' The assault targeted a camp that had been designated as a 'humanitarian zone' by Israel, intended to be a safe haven for displaced individuals.
Dire Conditions and Humanitarian Concerns
The situation in Al-Mawasi is dire, with the World Health Organization estimating that between 60,000 and 75,000 people are currently sheltering in the area. Many of these individuals had fled from Rafah following the onset of the Israeli offensive in May. The living conditions in the camp have been described as deplorable by various humanitarian organizations.
In a press release, the Hamas government's Health Ministry condemned the attack as a 'heinous massacre' and reported that 20 people had died and more than 90 were injured, with many of the injured transferred to Nasser hospital in Khan Younes. Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Civil Defense in Gaza, highlighted the difficulty in reaching the remains of the victims due to intense shooting, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
The Israeli army has stated that it is examining the information regarding the attack. As the international community watches closely, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to escalate, raising urgent calls for immediate intervention and aid.
