Israeli Army Prepares for Potential Offensive in Lebanon
The Israeli Army has officially approved and validated plans for a military offensive in Lebanon amid rising tensions with Hezbollah. This strategic decision was made during a joint situation assessment by Major General Ori Gordin, Commander of the Northern Military Region, and Major General Oded Basiuk, Head of the Operations Directorate. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have emphasized that while the approval of these operational plans does not necessarily indicate an imminent war, it underscores Israel's intention to be prepared for such a scenario.
Escalating Cross-Border Clashes
Since October 7, Hezbollah has launched over 5,000 rockets, missiles, and drones into northern Israel, claiming these attacks are in solidarity with the Palestinian people. In retaliation, Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks in Lebanon and evacuated approximately 60,000 residents from its northern border. More than 90,000 Lebanese have also fled their homes due to the ongoing conflict.
The United States is actively seeking a diplomatic solution to avoid a broader regional war. This week, U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein visited Israel and Lebanon to help ease the tensions. Despite these efforts, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz stated on social media that Israel is very close to changing the rules of engagement with Hezbollah and Lebanon, warning that an all-out war could result in the destruction of Hezbollah and severe impacts on Lebanon.
Hezbollah has stated it will only cease its attacks if Israel stops its military operations in Gaza. The conflict, which has seen daily clashes along the Israeli-Lebanese border, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. According to an AFP count, at least 473 people have died in Lebanon, the majority of whom are Hezbollah fighters and civilians, while Israel has reported the deaths of 15 soldiers and 11 civilians.
- The approval of the operational plans by the Israeli army highlights the increasing readiness and preparation of Israeli troops on the ground. This move comes as a part of Israel's broader strategy to counter Hezbollah's aggression and ensure the security of its northern regions.
- The situation remains volatile, with both sides engaging in almost daily clashes. Hezbollah's recent broadcast of drone footage over Haifa, a major port city in northern Israel, has further escalated tensions. The footage purportedly identifies various military, energy, and civilian infrastructure targets, although its authenticity could not be independently verified by AFP.
- The ongoing conflict has caused significant displacement, with tens of thousands of people fleeing their homes on both sides of the border. The international community continues to watch closely, with diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a full-scale war that could have devastating consequences for the region.
