Israeli Airstrike Claims Life in Southern Lebanon
On December 12, 2024, an Israeli airstrike in the Khiam area of southern Lebanon resulted in the death of one individual and left another injured, as reported by the Lebanese Ministry of Health. This incident occurred shortly after the United States announced Israel's withdrawal from the region, with the Lebanese army set to take over the area. The Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, expressed concern over the timing of the airstrike, noting that it happened less than 24 hours after the Lebanese army began its deployment in accordance with a ceasefire agreement.
Ongoing Violations of Ceasefire
The Lebanese Ministry of Health's Public Health Emergency Operations Center indicated that this airstrike was part of a broader pattern of violations, with the Israeli army committing six violations on the same day. Since the ceasefire took effect 15 days ago, there have been a total of 213 violations attributed to Israeli forces, resulting in 29 deaths and 32 injuries. The fragile ceasefire, which began on November 27, was established after two months of intense conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, leading to significant casualties and destruction in Lebanon.
Israeli Justification for Airstrikes
In response to the airstrike, the Israeli army claimed it targeted Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon who were allegedly posing a threat to Israeli citizens. The Israeli military emphasized its commitment to the ceasefire understandings, despite the ongoing attacks. The ceasefire agreement, which aims to stabilize the region, includes provisions for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and the reinforcement of both the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces in the area. A five-member committee has been established to monitor compliance with the ceasefire terms and address any reported violations.
