Israeli Deterrence at Stake: Lessons from History
Historian and former Israeli ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, emphasizes the urgent need for Israel to restore its deterrent military power following the devastating October 7 attacks by Hamas. In an article published in Yedioth Ahronoth, Oren reflects on the profound suffering experienced by Israelis and the significant military challenges that have arisen since that fateful day.
Oren recalls the historical military prowess of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), recalling their rapid victories in past conflicts, such as the 1967 Six-Day War and the 1976 Entebbe operation. However, he expresses concern that the IDF's reputation has been severely damaged, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon. He notes that despite Israel's military efforts, including the elimination of key Hezbollah leaders and the destruction of thousands of missiles, the group remains a potent threat.
The Urgency of Military Action Against Hezbollah
Oren argues that the failure to stop Hezbollah's attacks on northern Israel has further eroded Israel's security. He insists that Israel must achieve its military objectives, including pushing Hezbollah back beyond the Litani River, to restore stability for its displaced citizens. He acknowledges the risks associated with escalating military action, including potential conflict with Iran and increased tensions with the United States, but believes that the dangers of inaction far outweigh these risks.
Drawing parallels to historical events, Oren likens Israel's current situation to the United States' response to the Pearl Harbor attack in World War II. He asserts that just as American forces turned the tide at the Battle of Midway, Israel must decisively defeat Hezbollah to reclaim its deterrent image. He warns that hesitation could lead to further deterioration of Israel's military reputation and security in the region.
