Military expert Fayez Al-Duwairi discusses Israel's recent assassinations in Beirut targeting Hezbollah leaders, emphasizing the strategic significance of the town of Shamaa in southern Lebanon.

Israeli Assassinations in Beirut: A Tactical Move Against Hezbollah

Military expert Major General Fayez Al-Duwairi has characterized the recent assassinations conducted by the Israeli army in Beirut as a "negotiation under fire." This strategy aims to exert internal pressure on Hezbollah, particularly following the targeted killings of nine of its leaders, including prominent figures such as former Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and military leaders Fouad Shukr and Ibrahim Aqil. The latest operation resulted in the assassination of Hezbollah's media relations official, Muhammad Afif, in the Ras al-Nabaa area, followed by a raid on Mar Elias Street, targeting a key operations leader in Hezbollah's southern front.

Strategic Importance of Shamaa

Al-Duwairi highlighted the significance of the town of Shamaa, located approximately 5.7 kilometers from the Israeli border, as a strategic objective for the Israeli military. Control over Shamaa would enable Israel to supervise the coastal road to Tyre and restrict the movements of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force. The Israeli army has made advances in the area, with the 146th Division reportedly gaining ground from Tyre Harfa. The military expert noted that the terrain requires the Israeli forces to engage in combat at specific points, utilizing accessible lands and paved roads to navigate effectively.

Ongoing Military Operations and Regional Implications

The Israeli military has intensified its operations against Hezbollah since September 23, expanding its campaign across Lebanon, including unprecedented air strikes in Beirut. Ground incursions have also been initiated, with five military divisions deployed along the Lebanese border. Al-Duwairi emphasized that the current military landscape presents challenges for the Israeli army, as they have not achieved significant accomplishments despite their aggressive tactics. The ongoing conflict raises concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region, as both sides continue to engage in hostilities.
