IDF's Investigation into Kibbutz Bari Defense Failures
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently disclosed the findings of an investigation into its performance during the defense of Kibbutz Bari on October 7. The report revealed a significant failure in protecting the residents from a terrorist attack. While the bravery of the residents and the kibbutz's standby unit was commended, the overall defense strategy was criticized. The political response has been swift, with calls for a state commission of inquiry to further investigate the failures and hold those responsible accountable.
Avigdor Lieberman, chairman of the Israel Beitenu party, emphasized the need for an inquiry led by a judge. He pointed out that the investigation should start with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense, who are deemed primarily responsible for this failure. Similarly, Major General Yair Golan, chairman of the Democrats and former deputy chief of staff, echoed the necessity for a comprehensive state commission of inquiry to ensure such failures do not recur.
Emotional Reactions from Kibbutz Bari Members
On the same day, Reserve Major Miki Edelstein and IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Daniel Hagari presented the investigation's findings to the evacuees from Kibbutz Bari, currently staying at a hotel by the Dead Sea. Edelstein, who led the investigation, has a deep understanding of the Gaza sector and its residents, having served as the commander of the Gaza Division.
During the presentation, some kibbutz members expressed their dissatisfaction with the report, particularly regarding the lack of definitive conclusions and accountability. They voiced their frustration over the IDF's delayed response and the failure to prevent the massacre. One kibbutz member poignantly remarked that the situation could have been handled differently with a simple act of asking for forgiveness.
The investigation also addressed the controversial incident involving the death of hostages due to an IDF shell, ordered by Brigadier General Barak Hiram. The report vindicated Hiram, noting that his decisions were made in consultation with other military officials and under challenging circumstances. Despite the criticisms, Hiram was praised for his leadership during the partial functioning of the Gaza Division.
