Ibrahima Konaté, the 25-year-old central defender for Liverpool, has voiced his concerns regarding the ongoing political crisis in France. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the Euro 8th final against Belgium, Konaté addressed the issue of Franco-Malian dual nationality and the rise of the National Rally, which seeks to restrict access to certain positions for dual nationals.
Konaté emphasized the importance of diversity in France, calling it the country's strength. He criticized the media for sometimes perpetuating fear and stereotypes. 'We must stop prejudices and stereotypes. We have to be together in all circumstances,' he stated. Reflecting on his own background, Konaté shared his personal experiences growing up in Paris. He highlighted the hard work and sacrifices of his immigrant parents, who held difficult jobs such as garbage collectors and cleaners. 'There is always a minority who will cause harm to the majority. When I see my parents who have difficult jobs, and we don't highlight these people who gave their health for France, it makes me sad,' he said.
Konaté also touched on the sensitive topics of immigration and Islam, expressing his sadness over discussions about banning the veil in public spaces. 'It is never the people concerned who talk about this subject. France is a magnificent country. Some people only have news channels to get information, and it is sometimes complicated to judge what is true and what is false,' he noted. He urged people to go beyond appearances and skin colors, emphasizing the importance of meeting and understanding each other.
In his concluding remarks, Konaté encouraged everyone to vote but refrained from giving specific voting instructions. 'I’m not going to tell people what to do, but we have to stay together. Life is very short, it is very beautiful, and we must not be in division because it will only bring harm to everyone and future generations,' he said. Despite the French team's lack of joint action on the issue, Konaté's message was clear: unity and understanding are crucial for the future of France.
