Honduras' leftist President Xiomara Castro has announced her surprise decision to cancel the extradition treaty with the United States, citing concerns over its potential misuse against her government and military leaders. This decision follows criticism from the US ambassador regarding a controversial meeting involving Honduran military officials and their Venezuelan counterpart, raising tensions between the two nations.
In response to the US ambassador's remarks, Castro labeled them as an intolerable attack. The cancellation of the extradition treaty, which has been instrumental in combating drug trafficking, is seen as a necessary measure to safeguard the Honduran armed forces from coercion and potential political manipulation. Foreign Minister Enrique Reyna emphasized that the treaty could be weaponized against the current government amid allegations of a military coup plot.
