Hamas Urges Arab Nations to Use Oil as Leverage Against Israel
In a recent statement, Taher Al-Nunu, media advisor to Hamas' political bureau, called on Arab nations to leverage their oil resources to exert pressure on Israel and its allies. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Al-Nunu emphasized the need for a unified Arab stance to confront what he described as the ongoing catastrophe in the northern Gaza Strip, where Israeli military operations have intensified, leading to widespread displacement of residents. He urged the Arab world to activate previously formed committees aimed at addressing the Israeli occupation and to organize protests in solidarity with the people of Gaza.
Al-Nunu's remarks echo historical precedents, referencing the 1973 oil embargo that significantly impacted the U.S. economy and aimed to counter Israeli advances into Arab territories. He condemned the current international and Arab silence regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling it a form of complicity in the ongoing violence. The ongoing Israeli military campaign has reportedly resulted in the deaths of over 800 individuals in the Jabalia camp and northern Gaza, according to local medical sources.
As the situation deteriorates, with reports of hospitals being bombed and civilian infrastructure being targeted, Al-Nunu condemned these actions as acts of terrorism. He highlighted the urgency for Arab nations to take action, stating that the bombing of hospitals in Gaza has gone largely unnoticed by the international community. Furthermore, he criticized the Israeli government for obstructing peace negotiations and continuing military aggression. Hamas leaders have indicated their willingness to engage in discussions that would lead to a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the region.
