The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. on Boulevard Jean-Pain, near the town hall, when an Audi RS3 collided with a Peugeot stopped at a red light. According to the public prosecutor, Éric Vaillant, the driver of the Audi, who is believed to have been intoxicated, pulled out a handgun and shot Dejean twice in the chest after he intervened. Despite being rushed to Grenobles-Alpes University Hospital, Dejean succumbed to his injuries later that afternoon. The elderly lady driving the Peugeot was also reported to have sustained minor injuries during the incident. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the shooter, who fled the scene on foot.
