Medical Scientists Call for Global Action Against Gaza Genocide
A coalition of 15 medical scientists, led by Italian geneticist Paola Manduca, has issued an urgent appeal to the global community to address what they describe as a genocide occurring in the Gaza Strip. The appeal, titled "Condemning the Genocide in Gaza and Taking Necessary Action," highlights the dire situation in hospitals such as Kamal Adwan, Indonesian, and Al-Awda, which have been ordered to evacuate amidst ongoing bombardments. The scientists argue that the evacuation orders are part of a systematic attempt to eliminate medical care for Palestinians, particularly vulnerable populations like children and kidney dialysis patients.
The appeal emphasizes that medical organizations worldwide must condemn the denial of treatment in Gaza, warning that silence equates to complicity in the ongoing violence. The scientists report that Israel has rejected multiple requests from the World Health Organization (WHO) to evacuate hospitals, and they cite alarming statistics, including the deaths of over 1,000 healthcare workers and the targeting of medical facilities by the Israeli army.
Silence from Medical Journals and Organizations
Despite the urgent nature of their appeal, the scientists have faced significant barriers in disseminating their message. Two prominent medical journals have refused to publish the appeal, citing insufficient ethical content. Manduca, who has firsthand experience working in Gaza, expressed her dismay at the silence of major health organizations, calling it "horrific" and urging them to advocate for an end to the violence.
The appeal also criticizes the actions of some Israeli doctors, who have publicly supported military actions against Palestinians, contradicting international medical ethics. The scientists argue that the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by the conflict, has resulted in over 147,000 casualties, predominantly among women and children, and has led to widespread famine and destruction.
As the situation continues to deteriorate, the scientists call for immediate global action to protect the lives of those in Gaza and to hold accountable those responsible for the ongoing atrocities.
