Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Since the onset of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7, the Gaza Strip has witnessed unprecedented levels of destruction and loss of life. According to the Hamas-run government of Gaza, 16,054 children and 10,700 women are among the 38,345 Palestinians killed. The conflict has also resulted in the obliteration of 80,000 housing units, 34 hospitals, 609 mosques, three churches, and 115 educational institutions.
Escalation of Violence and Economic Hardship in the West Bank
The situation in the West Bank is also deteriorating. The Israeli secret services have reported that 40,000 Palestinians have illegally crossed the separation barrier to work in Israel, mainly in farms and construction. This is driven by severe economic hardship and high unemployment rates. Violence in the West Bank has reached levels not seen since the second Intifada, further exacerbating the crisis.
Diplomatic Efforts and Continuing Hostilities
Despite the end of a vast Israeli operation in the eastern sector of Gaza City, intense fighting continues. New diplomatic discussions are set to begin in Qatar, involving the United States and Egypt, to negotiate a ceasefire and the release of hostages taken by Hamas. The Israeli army continues its operations in Gaza, targeting Hamas fighters and infrastructure. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with areas like the Shujaiya district being described as 'disaster zones' and 'ghost towns'.
- On Wednesday evening, the Israeli army announced that it had 'completed' its operations in Shujaiya, which had been a scene of violent fighting since June 27. The offensive led to the dismantling of eight tunnels and the killing of 'dozens of terrorists,' according to Israeli sources.
- The Israeli army's operations have been extended to other districts in Gaza City, with residents being urged to evacuate through 'security corridors.' Despite these efforts, the humanitarian toll is staggering, with immense destruction and loss of life.
- Hostilities also continue in the south of Gaza, particularly in the town of Rafah near the Egyptian border. The Israeli army claims to have 'eliminated dozens of terrorists' in this region, further intensifying the conflict.
