Harsh Winter Conditions for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza
As winter sets in, nearly one million displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are facing dire conditions due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the Israeli military operations that began on October 7, 2023. Activists and humanitarian organizations report that many families are living in makeshift tents that offer little protection against the cold and rain. Salwa Al-Ghafari, an activist, vividly describes the scene: "Cold and winter, tents without roofs, a man searching among piles of tired people, raging winds and trembling hearts."
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has raised alarms about the urgent need for shelter and warmth, revealing that only 23% of the needs of the displaced have been met. Approximately 945,000 Palestinians are at risk of exposure to the harsh winter conditions, with UNRWA emphasizing the necessity for immediate assistance to provide adequate shelter and protection from the elements.
Ongoing Humanitarian Crisis and International Response
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached critical levels, with reports indicating that less than a quarter of the shelter needs have been addressed. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) confirmed that hundreds of thousands are living in damaged buildings or temporary shelters, highlighting the urgent requirement for tarpaulins and insulation materials to protect the vulnerable population.
Recent weather events have further complicated the situation, with heavy rains damaging around 10,000 tents. The blockade imposed by Israel has prevented the entry of essential supplies, including 250,000 tents and mobile homes, worsening the plight of those displaced.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with reports indicating over 149,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured, predominantly affecting children and women. The destruction of critical infrastructure, including hospitals and water systems, has intensified the humanitarian crisis, leaving many without access to basic necessities.
As the winter progresses, the international community faces increasing pressure to respond to the urgent needs of the displaced population in Gaza. Activists and humanitarian organizations continue to call for immediate action to alleviate the suffering of those affected by this devastating conflict.
