Enhanced Security Measures for France-Israel Match
In light of the escalating tensions in the Middle East and recent violence against Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters in Amsterdam, the French government has implemented extraordinary security measures for the upcoming football match between France and Israel at the Stade de France. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau emphasized the importance of these measures during a recent interview, stating, "There is no particular threat, but zero risk does not exist."
A total of 4,000 police and gendarmes will be deployed, including 2,500 around the stadium and 1,500 in Paris and its transport systems. The elite unit of the RAID will also be present to ensure the safety of Israeli athletes. Additionally, 1,600 security agents hired by the French Football Federation (FFF) will be stationed inside the stadium, a significant increase from the usual 1,200 to 1,300 for sold-out matches.
The match is expected to draw around 20,000 spectators, significantly below the stadium's capacity of 80,000, allowing for more stringent security protocols. Authorities have mandated that surrounding shops and bars close early, and spectators will face double security checks, including identity verification and pat-downs. Notably, only French and Israeli flags will be permitted inside the stadium, with Palestinian flags banned.
Context of Security Concerns
The heightened security comes amid a worrying rise in anti-Semitic incidents in France, which have reportedly quadrupled in the past year. Minister Retailleau reiterated the government's commitment to preventing any anti-Semitic acts during the match, stating, "There is no question of letting the slightest anti-Semitic deviation pass." The government faced pressure to either cancel the match or hold it behind closed doors, but Retailleau firmly rejected these suggestions, asserting that France will not yield to those who promote hatred.
As the match approaches, authorities remain vigilant, prepared to respond to any potential threats while ensuring a safe environment for all attendees.
