Emmanuel Macron's State Visit to Saudi Arabia: Strengthening Ties and Regional Stability
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to embark on a three-day state visit to Saudi Arabia, commencing on December 2, 2024. This visit aims to bolster the bilateral relationship between France and Saudi Arabia, focusing on regional stabilization and economic cooperation. Macron is expected to arrive in Riyadh at 7 PM local time for a private meeting followed by dinner with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, marking his third visit to the kingdom since taking office in 2017.
The Élysée Palace has emphasized that this visit seeks to elevate the relationship to a strategic partnership, a significant development since the last state visit by a French president in 2006. Discussions will center on various regional conflicts, particularly the situation in Lebanon, where Macron hopes to secure Saudi support for the Lebanese army amid ongoing political instability. The two leaders are also expected to advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza and a political resolution based on a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine.
Economic and Cultural Cooperation: A Focus on Diversification
In addition to political discussions, Macron's visit will include a strong economic component, with plans to enhance bilateral trade and investment. Accompanied by a delegation of approximately fifty French business leaders, Macron aims to explore opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and cultural projects. Notably, discussions regarding the acquisition of Rafale fighter jets by Saudi Arabia may take place during this visit.
Furthermore, the partnership extends to cultural initiatives, with a $20 billion project underway to develop the Al-Ula archaeological site into a major tourism destination. Macron's itinerary includes a visit to Al-Ula, where he will meet with French cultural officials to discuss the establishment of a contemporary art museum dedicated to Arab artists. This visit not only signifies France's commitment to strengthening ties with Saudi Arabia but also highlights the kingdom's efforts to diversify its economy away from oil dependency.
