In a recent social media post, Elon Musk announced a potential ban on Apple devices across his companies—Tesla, SpaceX, Starlink, Boring Company, and X—due to Apple's new AI integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Musk stated, “This is an unacceptable security violation,” highlighting his concerns about data security and privacy.
Apple recently revealed its commitment to artificial intelligence by integrating OpenAI's ChatGPT into its Siri voice assistant. This integration will enable Siri to resolve queries using the capabilities of ChatGPT. However, Musk's apprehensions revolve around privacy and the handling of user data, given OpenAI's involvement. “Apple has no idea what really happens once they hand over their data to OpenAI,” Musk argued.
This announcement from Apple came from a Cupertino, California presentation, where the tech giant emphasized that users' permissions would be required to share their questions with ChatGPT. Moreover, the agreement explicitly states that no private information will be stored. This AI functionality will be available only on iPhone 15 Pro models and newer, as well as tablets and computers equipped with advanced processors.
The tension between Musk and OpenAI isn't new. Last March, Musk sued OpenAI, an organization he co-founded in 2015, accusing it of straying from its original non-profit mission to benefit humanity. Musk's lawsuit aims to force OpenAI to return to its founding principles, especially in light of its partnership with Microsoft, which now holds a 49% stake in OpenAI.
Adding to the complexity, Musk has established his own AI startup, xAI, which recently attained a valuation of $24 billion. His chatbot, Grok, became open source shortly after the lawsuit, allowing developers worldwide to access it.
The controversy reached its peak when Apple executives Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea continued with an AI-focused conference without addressing Musk's criticisms. Musk's determination to prevent Apple's OS-integrated AI from penetrating his corporate infrastructure remains unwavering, as he plans to enforce stringent measures like requiring visitors to leave their Apple devices in a Faraday cage to prevent any electromagnetic interference.
