NMR APC Disaster in Rafah: Eight Soldiers Killed in Explosion
A catastrophic event led to the loss of eight soldiers from the Givati Brigade in Rafah on June 12, 2024, due to an explosion involving a highly protected Namra (NMR) APC. Despite being one of the most protected vehicles in the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), initial investigations have not yet pinpointed the exact cause of the explosion or the placement of the sabotage devices carried by the NMR APC, which may have exacerbated the blast.
The NMR APC, which entered service in the IDF in 2016, is a derivative of the Chariot Tank and the older Foma APC. Specifically designed to meet the needs of the Engineer Corps fighters, it aids in land maneuvers to breach obstacles and neutralize threats like explosive charges, mines, and underground warfare. One of its key features is a 0.5 machine gun controlled from within the fighter's compartment, enabling its use without exposing soldiers to external threats.
Equipped to carry ten fighters along with explosive equipment, the NMR APC also offers state-of-the-art electronic means for spatial control. Its design includes air conditioning, a cold water dispenser, and ergonomically designed chairs for soldiers carrying protective gear. Its innovative 'wind jacket' protection system is recognized as one of the best globally, making it one of the most safeguarded armored combat vehicles.
For versatile operations, the APC can be outfitted with minefield breaching tools, bridging capabilities, and charge-neutralizing equipment. It comes in three configurations: with a bulldozer, breaching mechanisms, and bridging tools. However, past incidents, including a tragic event on October 31 when 11 soldiers were killed, have highlighted the need for strict adherence to safety protocols, such as avoiding storage of ammunition and explosive devices in the combatants' compartment except in designated spaces within the APC.
- Captain Wassem Mahmoud, 23, from the village of BeitJann in northern Israel, was among the soldiers who lost their lives in this tragic event. The IDF is focusing on detailed investigations to uncover the root causes and prevent future occurrences.
