The Controversial Return of Settlements to Gaza
Daniela Weiss, known as the 'godmother of the settlement movement,' has made headlines following her unauthorized entry into the Gaza Strip, where she aims to re-establish Jewish settlements. Weiss, who leads the Nahala organization, was reportedly aided by Israeli soldiers to survey potential settlement sites, despite the Israeli military's claims that her entry was illegal and not sanctioned by higher authorities. This incident coincides with heightened tensions in the region, particularly following the death of Israeli historian Zeev Erlich in Lebanon.
During her visit, Weiss expressed her vision for the future of Gaza, stating that she plans to create civilian communes that would eventually gain government recognition. She emphasized her belief that the area would be devoid of Arab residents post-conflict, a statement that has sparked significant controversy. Weiss also revealed that approximately 500 families have expressed interest in relocating to Gaza, framing this initiative as a response to the recent violence and a priority for her organization.
Weiss's plans include reviving the Gush Katif settlement bloc, which was dismantled in 2005. She has invited individuals to register for potential relocation, asserting her conviction that these settlements will be realized in her lifetime. The Nahala organization is reportedly seeking funding for these ambitious plans, including outreach efforts in the United States.
